Fresh Red Tamarillo
Tamarillos are related to both the tomato and the potato and originated in the Peruvian Andes. They are widely consumed throughout South America where they are blended with sugar and water to create a refreshing vegetable drink.
Also known as the "tree tomato," the egg-shaped Tamarillo has a glossy dark red skin and is sold with the husk-like stem attached. Its tiny edible seeds are surrounded by a rich, juicy pulp and apricot-like flesh, which has a bitter-tart and complex tomato flavor.
Tamarillos are especially delicous when cooked into a compote and added to stews, chutneys and curries. They are also delcious sweetened and served with vanilla ice cream, or blended into sorbets and desserts.
