Tejocote (pronounced te-ho-CO-teh) is a small fruit native to Mexico and parts of Central America. Its scientific name is Crataegus mexicana, and it’s sometimes called Mexican hawthorn. The fruit looks a bit like a tiny yellow-orange crabapple and has been used for centuries in Mexican cooking and traditional medicine. The word tejocote comes from the Nahuatl word texocotl, meaning “stone fruit.” It’s deeply tied to Mexican holiday culture — seeing tejocotes in the market is a sure sign that Christmas is coming.
